The University of Évora was the second university to be founded in Portugal. After the founding of the University of Coimbra in 1537, the need was felt for another university to serve the south of the country. The solemn inauguration took place on November 1st, 1559. Even today, on this day, the anniversary of the University is celebrated with the solemn opening ceremony of the academic year. In 1973, by law of the then Minister of Education, José Veiga Simão, the University Institute of Évora was created, which would be extinguished in 1979, to give way to the new University of Évora. Today, the University of Evora is installed in a wide spectrum of knowledge, in which it offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees; but also informal courses aimed at recycling knowledge and ensuring lifelong learning for the working and retired population. Having undergone international evaluation, the University of Evora is now an integral part of the European Network of Higher Education and Science, and its diplomas are recognized and validated. Through the Alentejo Science and Technology Park, the University of Évora seeks to be a partner of the companies based here, encouraging them to innovate products and methods and improve their competitiveness. With the arts, humanities, sciences and technologies, the University of Évora continues the journey from the past into the future.

Instituto Politécnico de Viana do Castelo (IPVC)

Rita Pinheiro | ritapinheiro@estg.ipvc.pt

Created in 1980 by Decree-Law 303/80 of August 16th , the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo [IPVC] is located in Alto Minho, a territory where occupation and human activities are developed in a tradition of valorization of natural resources. The IPVC aims to pursue, through its six Schools, human, cultural, scientific, technical and professional quality education, to carry out the necessary and adequate research to the pursuit of its mission and to cooperate with the regional community, particularly in its productive and business fabric, in a perspective of permanent dialogue and reciprocal valorization. In the Alto Minho Higher Education network, the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo is the entity with the largest educational offer. In addition to the Professional Higher Technical Courses [CTeSP], it provides higher education courses, including Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Masters (several in cooperation with foreign and national universities). In January 2013, the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education [A3ES] certifies the QMS-IPVC for a period of six years, having been the first Polytechnic, nationally, to have “this recognition” by A3ES. One form of differentiation and consolidation of the IPVC is its constant concern for quality, both in training and infrastructures, rather than just growth. Besides the teaching/learning activities, which are its main objective, the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo also develops, through its Higher Schools, other actions in the fields of research and development, community service provision, establishment of national and international partnerships and other actions of cultural nature. Despite its still short existence, there are already numerous projects developed by this office, both national and international, many of which are coordinated by the IPVC. The new challenges resulting from globalization lead the IPVC to adapt to the reality and dynamics of new societies, in an area of increasing intercommunication and sophistication of markets.
